grendel1.jpgThe Outcast
The Outcast is a achetype that does not have one specific look or way of acting. This is because they are all different ephialtes.jpg
in their own way. They are not like the other people in their society, and they are mostly differnt from one another. Some outcasts are banished because of the way that they act and how they look. Some are kicked from normal society becauseof something they have done. And sometimes they are just not allowed to join the society at all becuase they are scared of being banished or mistreated.

This archetype has come up in many different cultures around the world through out the ages. One of these characters is Grendel from the Anglo-Saxon poem "Beowulf". In the poem Grendel is a giant monster type of creature that has been ravaging Heorot for twelve long years until Beowulf comes to slay Grendel. Grendel is considered a outcast because he is physically and mentally differnt then the normal person and considered a monster. He was believed to be the son of Cain from the Bible. Grendel is very large compared to any Anglo-Saxon that was around there and stronger then all of them together. Grendel does not speak like the humans, he cannot form words but he can understand everything that the humans are saying toward him. He was viewed as a troll to the Anglo-Saxon people because he was so big and strong. And as he attacked them more and more he was always viewed as less and less of as a real friend and more and more as a killer threat that would kill all of their people. .

The Wandering Jew
The story of The Wandering Jew comes from the time of Jesus Christ. The whole story of him comes from while Jesus Christ was carrying the cross up the mountain, and it is said that he taunted Jesus Christ. And it is said that Jesus Christ cursed him to live forever but people will always know that he did taunt Jesus in his toughest time. After he had gotten this curse no one society would accept him, causing him to wander around aimlessly looking for a place to stay. He was outcast from all society for taunting someone in their time of the most need.

Ephialtes
In the modern film 300, there is a outcast figure. The movie is about the war between the small city-state of Sparta against the largest army ever formed, and the very large empire of Persia. The outcast's name is Ephialtes, and he is only outcast because he is and has been deformed. He asks for a chance to fight with the Spartans but the king Leonidas tests if he could lift the shield to provide proper protection for his fellow Spartans in the phalanx. When Ephialtes can not lift the shield the distance from his knees to his neck Leonidas says that he can not be used on the batlefield but could help the Spartans by clearing the battlefield and helping the dead and wounded. He is outcast because he is deformed and can not do the same tasks that a normal solider would be able to.

What This Says About Human Psycology?
I believe that this Archetype has stayed around for so long for two main reasons. The first one is because it gives the society a way to classify those who cannot be classified. It gives them a reason to toss them all out of the society and weed out the genetic problems in their society. People in charge always want to keep everything uniform so if someone comes into the society that looks different and acts different then all the rest then they have a reason and common belief behind them to be able to condem them from the society. I believe the second reason is that it gives the people who are outcast a feeling of belonging. It gives them a group that they can say they are joined in so that they dont have to wander around looking for something they can fit into. Everyone wants to feel like they belong so those who do not belong join together to make their own belonging feeling.
